LEME – the contemporary circus and artistic creation festival in unconventional spaces – is returning to Ílhavo from 5 to 8 December, bringing a vibrant wave of creativity and innovation. Over four days, cultural venues and unexpected locations will be transformed into stages for 19 companies from 13 countries, with more than 70 artists showcasing the best of contemporary circus. This edition of LEME promises to surprise audiences with 11 national premieres and two world premieres, spread across 42 performances of 16 shows.
One of the most anticipated moments will be the premiere of the show EGO, by João Pataco, an emerging artist supported by the festival. Delving into the depths of his mind, Pataco transforms his inner experience into movement, music, theatre, and clowning. The curious will be able to attend an open rehearsal on 16 November at the Fábrica das Ideias in Gafanha da Nazaré, as part of European Circus Night. The 2024 programme also features several unmissable national premieres: Konstrukt by Dora Komenda, a finalist of the Circusnext platform; Damocès by the French company Cirque Inextremiste; La Bande à Tyrex, a collective of contagious energy; and Glorious Bodies by Cie. Circumstances, which pushes the physical limits of senior circus artists.
Other highlights include the presentation of the artistic prototypes from the European project Hand to Hand, developed during residencies in the fish industry of Gafanha da Nazaré, and four projects from the Navegar section, where young talents from Portuguese circus schools reveal their works in progress. Among the creations are Petralaions by Lucia Heege Torres, Slow Down by Marianna de Sanctis and Perrine Budan, Sar-Tan by Amir Guetta, PORØS by Darya Efrat and Mathilde Roy, Structures by Mile Lundt, Baby Don’t Hurt Me by Clara Cortés Soler, and Amphibia Matter by Juana Ortega Kippes.
Another innovative project, BETA CIRCUS, presents the premiere of Weaving Windows, a creation by Melody Nolan, Omer Van Soldt, and WETUMTUM, which reimagines public space through circus and participatory art, developed over three weeks with the local community near the Casa da Cultura in Ílhavo. As part of the Outdoor Arts Portugal Showcase, three shows promise to redefine the relationship between circus and public space: Cafelina by Merlina, Caravana by Projecto EZ, and Concorda by the Portuguese company of the same name.
In addition to the performances, the festival is committed to a strong educational component, with two workshops and a three-day international forum. This forum, closely connected with BETA CIRCUS, Hand to Hand, and Outdoor Arts Portugal, will provide a space for reflection on public space art, participatory circus, and social well-being, bringing together artists, professionals, and circus students from across Europe.
The sixth edition of LEME delves into reflection on territory and people’s relationship with the spaces they inhabit. Contemporary circus, when interacting with the audience, reveals itself as a space of freedom, where individual stories intertwine to form a powerful and transformative collective narrative.

Durante quatro dias, espaços culturais e locais inesperados irão transformar-se em palcos para 19 companhias de 13 países, com mais de 70 artistas a apresentar o melhor do circo contemporâneo. Nesta edição, o LEME promete surpreender com 11 estreias nacionais e duas estreias absolutas, distribuídas por 42 récitas de 16 espetáculos.
Um dos momentos mais aguardados será a estreia do espetáculo “EGO”, de João Pataco, criador emergente apoiado pelo festival. Explorando as profundezas da sua mente, Pataco transforma a sua experiência interna em movimento, música, teatro e clown. Os curiosos poderão assistir a um ensaio aberto no dia 16 de novembro, na Fábrica das Ideias da Gafanha da Nazaré, como parte da Noite Europeia do Circo. Este fórum, desenvolvido em ligação estreita com o BETA CIRCUS, Hand to Hand e Outdoor Arts Portugal, vai proporcionar um espaço de reflexão sobre arte em espaço público, circo participativo e bem-estar social, reunindo artistas, profissionais e estudantes de circo de toda a Europa.
A sexta edição do LEME mergulha na reflexão sobre o território e a relação das pessoas com o espaço que habitam. O circo contemporâneo, ao cruzar-se com o público, revela-se como um espaço de liberdade, onde as histórias individuais se entrelaçam para formar uma narrativa coletiva poderosa e transformadora.
