Within the scope of its Centenary celebrations, the Teatro Nacional São João promotes an event of multiple-voiced reflection that is also intended as a self-questioning gesture: an international conference in which we will provide an inter pares diagnosis and prognosis for an institution that, though somewhat ancient, remains very much alive. Over three days, we will examine the missions, tensions and transformations of the National Theatres in their endless incarnations, developing and discussing the subject across a variety of languages and geographies. Furthermore, we will try to find ways to foster the immense legacy these institutions have amassed over time – and celebrate their inexhaustible artistic and political potential as collective and collaborative places of creation, representation and participation. Two highlights of this event, which is largely based on the round-table format, will be its opening and closing conferences, respectively by the American theatrologist Marvin Carlson and by the Polish essayist Elzbieta Matynia. Carlson’s field of study is the history of Western theatre: he is the author of several books, namely The Haunted Stage, of which a Portuguese translation (Palco Assombrado) is included in the TNSJ’s Empilhadora collection. Matynia is the founder and director of the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies (New York). In one of her most important books, Performative Democracy, she defines the conditions for performativity in public life.
Integrado nas comemorações do Centenário e num gesto de reflexão e de autoquestionamento, o Teatro Nacional São João promove um colóquio internacional em que se fará o diagnóstico inter pares de uma instituição já um tanto vetusta, mas não menos viva. Ao longo de três dias, sondamos as missões, as tensões e as transformações dos Teatros Nacionais nas suas infinitas encarnações, problematizando o conceito em várias línguas e geografias. E interrogamos como prosseguir o imenso legado que estas instituições vêm acumulando, e como celebrar o seu inesgotável potencial, artístico e político, enquanto lugares colaborativos de criação, representação e participação. Num evento que privilegia a mesa-redonda como dispositivo de debate, destacamos as conferências de abertura, do teatrólogo norte-americano Marvin Carlson, e de encerramento, a cargo da ensaísta polaca Elzbieta Matynia. Carlson vem dedicando o grande fôlego da sua investigação à história do teatro ocidental e é autor, entre outros, de Palco Assombrado, livro que o TNSJ publicou na coleção Empilhadora. Matynia fundou e dirige o Transregional Center for Democratic Studies (Nova Iorque). Numa das suas obras de referência, Performative Democracy, identifica as condições para uma performatividade na vida pública.
